Impact of failing the subject of Thermodynamics on the school dropout rate in the Chemical Engineering major
case of the Technological Institute of La Laguna/National Technological Institute of Mexico

School dropouts are an issue of utmost importance for each of the educational centers. Identifying the factors involved in students abandoning their university career is essential to establish strategies that allow reducing the dropout percentage. However, knowing these causes is a difficult task, since they depend about each student. According to the teaching academy of the Department of Chemical-Biochemical Engineering of the Laguna Technological Institute (LTI)/National Technological Institute of Mexico, an important factor in school dropout in the Chemical Engineering major is failure of the subject Thermodynamics. This subject is fundamental for the development and advancement of the student, as it is part of two aspects of nine subsequent subjects. Therefore, failing it means a significant delay in your career. This research had a non-experimental quantitative approach, and its objective was to find the percentage that the failure of Thermodynamics represents in the annual dropout rates in the LTI Chemical Engineering career between 2018 and 2023. The data determined that of the total annual dropouts In the Chemical Engineering major, 15 to 30% correspond to students who failed the subject.
