Abstract

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) sustain a large portion of employment and economic activity. Therefore, it is important to understand how they organize their key functions. Sustainability is a balance between economic, social, and environmental outcomes that can be integrated into strategy and operational areas. This study mapped the literature linking functional strategies with sustainability and social responsibility in MSMEs through a bibliometric analysis in Scopus. A thesaurus was constructed to unify synonyms, and Bibliometrix and VOSviewer were used to analyze co-occurrences, co-citations, and thematic evolution. The results showed sustained growth in publications, with a notable increase starting in 2020. The core intellectual discourse combined strategic fundamentals, quantitative measurement, and applied evidence in sustainability, while digital transformation topics such as social media, e-commerce, analytics, artificial intelligence, and blockchain emerged strongly. It was concluded that the field is moving towards the integration of functions with sustainability as the organizing principle and that, to strengthen validity and practical utility, it is advisable to standardize maturity and performance indicators, combine questionnaires with operational and platform data, and promote longitudinal designs.
