Social responsibility through the learning and service methodology

Abstract

This research established the importance of incorporating university social responsibility into higher education. To this end, the Service-Learning (SLL) methodology was used as a key tool for training professionals committed to society. It was highlighted that universities, especially public ones, must take an active role in developing ethical and social skills, not just teaching theoretical and practical knowledge. The study suggested that, while curricula focus on science and new technologies, soft skills such as empathy, emotional intelligence, and teamwork are often neglected. These are essential for responsible professional practice. The research focused on a practical case study at the Autonomous University of Querétaro, Mexico, where the SLL methodology was applied in projects that connect students with the community. The Host Communities project facilitated the integration of refugees and migrants through a Legal Clinic at the Law School. This project enabled students to acquire academic skills and raise awareness about social issues, such as migration and human rights.
